Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over a thousand years. Alfalfa has shown great promise in the treatment of high cholesterol. It is thought that the fibers in alfalfa stick to the "bad" cholesterol and prevent it from depositing in blood vessels. The "good" cholesterol however, is unaffected by alfalfa.
Alfalfa is a good laxitive and a natural diuretic (promotes the loss of water from the body) and as such Alfalfa relieves fluid retention and swelling. Alfalfa also enhances the immune system function and helps during menopause.
